I think one manager (can't remember who) called for a change to allow all unused 25 squad members to be on the bench... would be a good idea and allow youngsters to feel more involved and keep the squad happy.... if you are cruising a game 3-0 it gives scope for giving youngsters a run out who might not be on the bench otherwise.

12 subs allowed on the bench in Serie A.
Good for Ravel :).

Re: Reece Oxford

they should have enforced it when they did the increase from 5 to 7 subs that those two must be products of the clubs youth team
Instead they just made it easier for the bigger richer clubs, to have bigger better players on the bench which helps maintain their positions

Well you could name the senior subs and young players at the same time. And then the tough spots you go for senior players, when comfortable you blood a youngster.

They've already increased the size of the bench to try and encourage more young players.

A loan move to league 1 or two would do him good in my opinion.

I think the rules should change, so bigger benches are allowed. Would really help young players.

Its a hard balance to find
For me Oxford instead of Collins makes our bench weaker which seems silly to do. The first team should always be as strong as possible whether that be a 16 year old or a 32 year old.
Leicester in the cup can be his chance. Got to remember he is only 16.

Was talking about this last night.
Part of me loved the bench in the Liverpool game, great to see so many youngsters involved in the match day.
However it was also great to see how strong the bench was yesterday - stronger than I can ever remember.
The answer is it would be nice to see a balance.
Would have been happier to see say Oxford on the bench over Collins for instance.
The important thing however is that if they do make the bench and the game situation lends itself to it, they also need to be given a chance.
In my mind as a general that means if we're more than 1 goal down or more than 1 goal up with 5-10 mins to go then i'd be happier seeing youngsters given a chance over a senior/older player.

Totally agree, Alex. In some games if we're 2 - 0 up with 5 or 10 minutes to go it's a great opportunity to give young players a taste. It may not be much but it's better than nothing. The only drawback is that if senior players like Collins or Zarate are fit but not even on the bench, it doesn't do much for their confidence or morale.

I don't think young players need to be on the bench every week. Though I do like to see one on there. The bench at Liverpool was excessive though shown by the 4 players we brought in on deadline day.
Sitting on the bench for someone like Oxford or Cullen hopefully makes them hungry for more. And encouraged by it to work harder and harder to make the next step.

He is 16 If he gets 5 first team games we are probably having problems. Being around the squad and learning at u21 level is best for him now. Maybe playing against Leicester in the League Cup or being on the bench there. Id be thinking about a loan next season depending how he is developing.

Ogbonna will miss a few weeks with his hamstring, so it's occasions like this where he'll be back on the bench no doubt.

Good topic.
Clearly the majority of fans on here just want to see big signings and a packed squad of senior professionals. I have no problem with that view.
Personally I want to see youth on the bench and at the right time in the team itself. Some fans seemed to hate it, but I loved seeing so much young talent on there at Liverpool, and a bunch of those players will have very mixed feelings right now I would guess. Happiness for the club doing well, sadness that their chances look extremely limited right now.
On the bench I'd like to see three senior subs, the sort of players you call upon to change a game. The other three I'd like to see young players.

He is 16
Playing him regularly in the 21's will not harm him
Not many football league clubs will take on a 16 year old i'd imagine
